Spiritual Direction
There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.
~ "The Way It Is" by William Stafford

Following my own thread...
About 10 years ago, I asked a burning question: "How should we worship?" I searched in God's description of the Tent of Meeting in the Book of Exodus for an answer. Reasoning that we begin with the Sabbath and voluntary offerings and moved towards joining God in the Holy of Holies, I read the passage backward. As I burrowed in, I heard the voice of the Holy Spirit say "Luke" and began to also look at the life of Christ and how it fulfilled these different sections of the Tent of Meeting. An unexpected answer to my question came from all this searching "Grow!"
What emerged was a stage model of spiritual development that expanded to
encompass the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation.
Following this same thread led me to yoga training, then to completing an Independent Masters of Arts in Psychology and Spirituality, then to spiritual direction training through Sustainable Faith. Before following my thread, I was a preschool teacher who understood child development. Now I am a student spiritual development and work with women in troubled relationships, survivors of trauma or those in recovery
as a yoga instructor and spiritual director.
The thread of desire, reason, the voice of the Spirit, the Bible, prayer and
many teachers have all led me towards my authentic spiritual life.
Where will your thread lead you?
